  • The Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) which details the responsibility of the employer to ensure the wellbeing of his/her workforce.
  • The Electricity at Work Regulations (1989), outlining how you can minimise any electrical hazards.
  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999), which requires the execution of detailed risk assessments.

If you do not conduct regular PAT Testing, you could face serious consequences if an incident occurs. For example, your insurance could be rendered null, and you may even be prosecuted, depending on the severity of any incident.

What does PAT Testing involve?

Portable Appliance Testing is a process that you can either implement in-house, if you have the qualified staff members and correctly calibrated equipment, or you can contact an external contractor such as SFM.

The process involves conducting a visual inspection, together with electrical testing of all appliances within your workplace, covering everything from kitchen appliances, such as kettles and microwaves, to desktop computers and extension leads. This is to ensure they are safe, function correctly, and that there are no underlying issues that could lead to injury or malfunction.

If anything is a cause for concern, repairs can be carried out. Alternatively, if the issue is beyond repair, the appliance will be removed from service. Once the appliance is removed, so is the risk, ensuring the continued safety of your team.
