The workplace is where the majority of people spend most of their time in everyday life. Employees are the beating heart of a business, and it is vital that they are both fit and well to keep the business going. One key area that businesses now need to look at is their employee’s wellbeing.

Wellbeing in the office has been an up-and-coming topic that businesses have put to the side for many years. In this day and age with all the studies focusing on workplace wellness, it’s a topic you can no longer ignore.

What Is Wellbeing?

Wellbeing is ultimately where a person feels comfortable, happy and healthy.

Most people think this is broken down into physical and mental. Whilst this is true, there are lots of different subcategories that fit into these two areas, especially on the psychological side.

In a recent article published on Forbes, they discuss how the future of work is employee wellbeing.

In this article, they touched on the pillars of holistic wellbeing and how the workplace now needs to have a clear strategy for helping employees with these areas.

These pillars consist of:

  • Physical
  • Career
  • Financial
  • Social
  • Community
  • Emotional
  • Purpose

Employee wellness is more than just the mental and physical, and catering to the seven pillars will improve wellbeing.

Why Should Businesses Bother?

There are a variety of reasons why a business should focus on their staff health and wellbeing.

From a business perspective, employees are more productive when there are wellness incentives implemented at their company.

By making the workplace a wellbeing hub you can improve the health of your staff, decrease the amount of absence and increase productivity.

This all saves a monetary value to the business, but another way to look at it is that we are all human and life does have a daily impact.

By having a mindful approach to wellbeing, you can connect more with your employees, provide peace of mind and create a safe environment where they can grow and develop.

How Do I Implement Wellbeing in My Business?

There are many ways you can implement and promote wellbeing in the workplace. You can start by providing healthy snacks that people can grab as and when they feel a bit peckish.

Another way to improve wellbeing is through exercise. Providing access to exercise classes, setting up a company running group or offering a longer lunch break for a walk are popular options that businesses can do.

You could also look at providing access to counselling or mindful apps to your employees. Sometimes making sure your staff know that they can access this type of service when needed, can assist with people’s wellbeing.

And another option is to make the workspace a more relaxing environment. This could include incorporating new furniture such as a standing desk, sprucing the place up with plants or opening the space up for a more collaborative environment.

All of this can be managed yourself and you can reap the benefits of a workplace wellness program. Or you can bring in an external company that can assist with wellbeing.
